"Voices of DEI in Wind Energy" community

"Voices of DEI in Wind Energy" community

In this group, we share personal experiences and stories in the area of DEI with the wind energy science community, aiming to learn from and inspire each other, as well as to highlight and understand the key important aspects and identifying measures for improvement.

We welcome anyone to participate, regardless of background, experience or EAWE membership status. You can participate as much or as little as you’d like. We meet regularly online with the following format:

– Listening or reading contributed stories.

– Break-out groups to discuss the stories and share our own experiences with optional documentation.

– Presentation of the findings and learnings in the large group.

This link takes you to a Google Form, in which you will be asked to share your email address as a minimum (name, organisation and other demographics are optional and are only used for statistical purposes). You will then receive a Microsoft Teams invitation to our regular meet-up sessions. We won’t use your email address for anything else.

Get your voice heard - contribute your story

This community can only thrive through stories contributed by its members. You can share your stories as follows:

Submit a story – answer some questions related to your general experiences in the area of DEI via a Google Form, either in writing, in a self-recorded video or in an in-person dialogue.

  1. Reflecting on your journey and career, can you share a pivotal moment or experience that highlighted the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)?
  2. What obstacles or challenges related to DEI have you encountered along your path, and how have these experiences shaped your approach to your work?
  3. In moments of adversity, who or what has been your source of support or inspiration, and how has this influenced your advocacy for DEI within your professional community?
  4. Could you describe a specific instance where you felt empowered to make a positive change in promoting DEI, either through your work or within your broader community?
  5. Looking ahead, what are your hopes and aspirations for the future of DEI in wind energy science, and how do you envision your role in shaping this future?

Our meet-ups

Launch meeting on Jan. 17th, 2025

We will meet again at WESC2025. If you want to discuss your story at this event, please submit a story or a min-story at the above links before June 15th, 2025!

Launch meeting on Jan. 17th, 2025

At the launch meeting on Jan. 17th, 2025, we heard the stories from Sandrine Aubrun and Abbas Mehrad Kazemi Amiri, which you can find below. Some insights we had:

– We found that different people have different experiences of learning a new language and living in a different culture. Some of us found it difficult when colleagues always spoke the main language in the new country (because we couldn’t understand), and some of us found it difficult when they DIDN’T (because we couldn’t learn). We discussed the importance of talking openly (and perhaps with humour) about the situation.

– We discussed whether we should “take things personally” or not, when we observe discrimination against us. Some of us thought that we shouldn’t, and some of us thought we should. However, we all agreed that it is helpful to define concrete ways to improve things with non-violent communication.

– We also all agree that it is important to “call out” obvious discrimination, when we observe it. This is not always easy, but using non-violent communication was again suggested as a useful technique to do so.
